![]() Haiti - Politic : 9th Summit of the Americas, the PM asks for help from the IDB 08/06/2022 10:35:58
During this meeting, the Head of Government took stock of certain challenges facing Haiti such as : the decline in Gross Domestic Product over the past three years; the increase in inflation https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36842-haiti-economy-inflation-in-stront-increase-267-highest-for-19-years.html ; the decline in the standard of living of the population; rising food insecurity; banditry... Ariel Henry, recalled the upcoming implementation of social programs https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36773-haiti-politic-a-social-program-of-3-billion-gourdes.html which will be financed from the Public Treasury for the year 2021-2022, while indicating that the Government, determined to work towards the creation of a stable macroeconomic environment, intends to increase revenue and reduce inflation https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36662-haiti-economy-2105-billion-for-the-rectified-general-budget-2021-2022.html Apart from the Government's objective of attracting investment, the Prime Minister said he was determined to create the conditions conducive to the organisation, as soon as possible, of free, fair and democratic elections throughout the national territory. It is in this context above all that he is requesting budgetary support from the financial institution. The IDB, which is already financing many projects in Haiti, has not ruled out the possibility of supporting the country in the fight against insecurity and thinks it can provide financial and logistical assistance to the National Police of Haiti or to the Ministry of Justice. A follow-up meeting should, for this purpose, be scheduled to further discuss the possible contributions of the institution to the fight against insecurity. However, following this meeting, the IDB made no concrete promise, limiting itself to recalling that the IDB was working to finalize a program for an amount of approximately 1.3 billion dollars in collaboration with private sector partners to promote investment opportunities, particularly in the agriculture and textile sectors without further details.
