Haiti - Environment : Increase in the number of earthquakes (May 2022)
Compared to the month of April 2022 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36684-haiti-environment-108-earthquakes-recorded-in-the-country-in-april-2022.html the month of May recorded 9 more earthquakes, an increase of 7.69%.
Among the earthquakes recorded, 5 were felt by the population, the latter, of magnitude ranging from 4 to 4.5, had their epicenter located in the departments of Nippes, North-West and South-East.
96 earthquakes (82.05%) had a magnitude less than or equal to 3.
82 earthquakes (70%) occurred at a depth less than or equal to 10 km.
58 earthquakes (49.6%) occurred at sea with 1 along the North Hispaniola fault and 7 along the northern fault which could have posed a risk of tsunami if the conditions had been met.
The 96 earthquakes were located in the 3 departments affected by the earthquake of August 14, 2021, with 10 in the South, 38 in Nippes and 48 in Grand'Anse. During the month of May, the department of Grand'Anse was once again the most shaken.
From August 14, 2021 to May 31, 2022, 2,087 earthquakes were recorded in the great South :
954 in Nippes, 811 in Grand'Anse and 322 in Sud 322. These three departments therefore continue to suffer aftershocks from the major earthquake (7.2 on the Richter scale https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes.html ) which devastated the great South on August 14, 2021.
