Haiti - Crisis : Canada leads an assessment mission in Haiti
Mélanie Joly, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday Thursday that Canada is conducting an assessment mission in Haiti.

The international community has an important role to play in responding to the current humanitarian and security crisis in Haiti, and Canada strongly believes in supporting Haitians to find a durable solution.

A Canadian government delegation is carrying out consultations with regional partners, the United Nations, CARICOM and other partners.

They are now in Haiti to consult with stakeholders on options to support Haitian people in resolving the humanitarian and security crises and how Canada can contribute to the international response.

"Canada and the international community are concerned about the violence in Haiti, in particular against women and girls. Canada will not remain idle while gangs and those who support them terrorize Haiti’s citizens and we will continue to support law-abiding Haitians to put an end to the crisis in their country," support Mélanie Joly.

Canada’s efforts will focus on supporting Haitian-led solutions to restore access to essential goods and services, and will build on our longstanding engagement. Since 2010, we have provided almost two billion dollars to assist in strengthening Haitian institutions, including the National Police, and creating the conditions for Haiti to be a stable and democratic society through an inclusive dialogue that will lead to free and fair elections.
