Haiti - FLASH : «Gangs risk taking control of Haiti» warns Ambassador Bocchit Edmond

Bocchit Edmond, the Ambassador of Haiti in Washington called on the international community to accelerate talks on the deployment of an armed intervention in Haiti, while efforts to ratify a UN resolution supporting such a force seem to be at the dead point. He recalls that the United States and Canada held urgent talks on ways and means to get the country out of the impasse.

"It's important to see how we can move fast and make sure we put these armed gangs out of harm's way, because if we don't urgently, it's a matter of time, for they are taking over the whole country" adding "It will not be in the interest of all our closest neighbors if we allow such a thing to happen [...]"

"I understand there have been mistakes and I'm sure we've learned from them, and we can see how we can do things differently [...] But the one thing I'll say is that just look at the situation in Haiti, you have a population that is defenseless against armed gangs, which have far superior firepower to the national police," said Ambassador Edmond "Four million children can no longer go to school. Not everyone who needs care in a hospital can access it; you have a cholera epidemic; the drinking water companies cannot operate because the fuel terminal is blocked by gangs [...] Look at this landscape and make your own judgment [...]"
