Haiti - FLASH : Haitians massively expelled from the Dominican Republic 11/11/2022 08:46:35
The teams from the Directorate General for Migration (DGM), made up of inspectors, agents from the DGM with the support of the military, the National Police in coordination with the Public Ministry of the Provinces concerned, escorted back to the border 60,204 Haitians between August 1st and October 31, 2022 during operations to check migration status at the national level and to detect and intercept in the border area. August: 19,441 Haitians September: 18,107 Haitians October: 22,656 Haitians Information published by the Spokesman of the Dominican Presidency Homer Figueroa who stressed that these operations were carried out within the framework of "[...] the line established by President Luis Abinader to respect the law and to expel, repatriate or refuse the entry into the country to all those who do not meet the immigration conditions set by law." At the same time Filippo Grandi the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees called on the States of the region and beyond, to suspend the forced returns of Haitians to their country because of the situation of violence, health and food which prevails in Haiti Following the declaration of the Dominican Government of the repatriation of more than 60,000 Haitians in 3 months, Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, issued a declaration in which he specifically asks the Dominican Republic to stop the deportations because of the "humanitarian crisis" that this country is facing, stressing that Haiti does not currently meet the adequate security conditions for a "safe, dignified and sustainable" return of migrants, given the "armed violence relentless and systematic violations of human rights." Reacting to Volker Türk's statement, the President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader told the media, raising his voice, that the statements of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights calling on the Dominican Republic to stop the deportations of Haitians to their country of origin were unacceptable recalling that "The migration policy of each country is within the jurisdiction of each Government, which makes these statements unacceptable and irresponsible". While rejecting Türk's statement, President Abinader recalled "[...] the Dominican Republic is the country that has suffered the most economically (from the illegal migration of Haitians to its territory) and that has shown the most solidarity with Haiti that any other country in the world" therefore that one could not "ask more of the Dominican Republic" concluding that his country will not only "multiply the immigration control operations" but also "increase deportations” starting next week.
