Haiti - Crisis : The private sector proposes new business rules and 4 concrete measures
In a press note, published Thursday, December 8, 2022, the main associations of companies and entrepreneurs in the country and of businessmen unite for a way out of the crisis, a new conduct of business in Haiti and propose and commit to 4 concrete measures

Excerpts from the note:

"As the main associations of businesses and entrepreneurs in Haiti, we are deeply concerned by the persistence of the multidimensional crisis which continues to mourn families, asphyxiate the national economy and impoverish the vast majority of our fellow citizens. We are making an urgent appeal to the actors in our country to resolve their differences without delay and sign a political agreement establishing a government of national unity that strives to include as many actors as possible with a clear roadmap leading to the holding of honest, transparent and fair elections within a reasonable time.

The hour is serious, and the Nation cannot wait any longer. The signatories of the present make the solemn commitment to support this political agreement and to accompany the implementation of the reforms establishing new rules of conduct of politics and business in Haiti and the institutions that will be created to achieve the objective targeted []

We are committed to taking the following concrete measures :

  • Launch an immediate and intensive program of internal business practice reforms to promote transparency, fair competition, and strict adherence to the ethical and legal standards that should guide all economic activity in a democratic, peaceful, and stable Haiti. We will develop a public-private code of conduct to ensure transparent competitive practices, the rational and transparent collection and use of public funds, while requiring the strict application of the law to fight against corruption and impunity;

  • Cooperate with a consensus transitional administration to develop and present a political, humanitarian and economic roadmap towards a new Haiti, including the development of a Strategic Economic and Social Development Plan (PSDES) to attract investment foreign and national direct flows, create sustainable jobs and wealth, restore quality basic services to all segments of our population and restore hope, especially to young people;

  • Contribute to and support significant reforms in public institutions, so that the laws and regulations governing the functioning of the economy are fundamentally changed to promote free enterprise, fair and equitable competition, direct investment, competitiveness , social inclusion and economic growth;

  • Commit, with the return of political stability and security and the implementation of the PSDES by the State, to investing in communities to create sustainable jobs and improve living conditions, particularly in areas most affected by the effects of organized crime. We also call on the international community to establish a new long-term "win-win" partnership with the Haitian public and private institutions engaged in this effort, to help attract direct investment and provide resources in a new paradigm of development cooperation. sustainable.

As Haitians, we remain committed to the full independence of our Republic. But we also deplore the violence that is currently holding our economy and our communities hostage. That is why we urgently call on the government and the international community to act now to support and protect the free movement of people and goods across Haiti, and to protect Haitian families, especially those in the poorest regions, and the farmers on whom much of our economy depends.

[...] As representatives of the private sector, we are committed to doing our part so that this is Haiti's last political transition, and that this recourse to external security assistance is the last in our history, to break with the past and mark the beginning of a new and brighter era.
