Haiti - Social : 1,500 victims in Jacmel finally leave the hell of the camps

Ending in Jacmel with top three camps that are Toussaint Louverture, Wolf and Pinchinat, was the main objective of this projectw as the main objective of this project which was to build in the town of Mayard, 335 permanent housing to house about 1,500 people.

Designed to accommodate in each a family of five members, these houses with metal roofs are supported by a steel frame resting on a concrete base. Newly installed, new tenants of Mayard organize themselves to bring life in the city, for that they have a cinema, a shop supply for small grants, workshops of art and space dedicated to their leisure. After each relocation, the shelters empty are dismantled to prevent the installation of new families.

Last week, Viergela François the Deputy Mayor of Jacmel, Nigel Fisher, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Luca Dall’Oglio Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Haiti and Jean Marie Ntayomba, Head of Regional Office of Minustah have visited the new site at the end of the works.

"I am very satisfied with the work done to improve the living conditions of people, but I will be more when all people living under tents will be rehoused" declared Fisher.

"IOM will continue to provide support to local authorities and especially to the affected population," promised on the other hand Mr. Dall'Oglio. Moreover, he announced plans to seek additional funding to build more decent housing to meet other pending requests.

For his part, Viergela Francis, the Deputy Mayor of Jacmel plans to declare of public utility "all vacant land" to allow more construction.
