Haiti - Cuba : Bad weather puts an end to the journey of 253 illegal Haitian migrants
The 253 Haitians (161 men, 61 women and 31 children) who were traveling to the United States, finally arrived at the port of Kasasa, in Cayo Coco, north of Ciego Ávila (Cuba)
After the incident, Governor Tomás Alexis Martín Venegas and Lieutenant Governor Ania Francisco Malde, organized their temporary stay in an educational center in Manuel Suárez province (Ceballos 7), where the 253 Haitians received dignified medical care, solidarity and help from Cuba.
A group of specialists from the Cuban Red Cross also mobilized to prepare the place, make the beds, distribute toilets, food and basic necessities and give care to those who needed it.
In an irregular migratory situation, they will be repatriated to Haiti.
Let's recall that last February, another group of 292 Haitian migrants arrived in the province of Ciego de Ávila https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35936-haiti-social-cuba-collects-with-dignity-292-haitian-migrants-drifting-at-sea-for-5-days.html after the boat on which they were sailing had drifted after passing the Strait of Passage des Ventes (80 kilometers at its widest point), connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea.
According to official data from Cuba, from 2001 to 2021, 76 boats arrived on the Cuban coast with more than 4,000 Haitian migrants in an irregular migratory situation and this, only in the Cuban province of Guantánamo (East)
