Haiti - NOTICE : Call for applications, Anténor Firmin doctoral scholarships
The French Embassy in Haiti, the Francophonie University Agency (AUF) in the Caribbean, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) and the Research Institute for Development (IRD) are launching the 4th edition of the Anténor Firmin program, intended to support doctoral mobility, thus strengthening research training and scientific cooperation.

Mobilities and their funding are multi-annual; the projects presented must therefore schedule travel for the duration of the thesis (3 years max). The Anténor Firmin doctoral mobility program will cover research stays abroad, which may last a maximum of six months per academic year.

Who is eligible?
Doctoral students who will enroll in the 1st year of the thesis during the 2023/2024 academic year for a period of 3 years and whose system provides for international co-direction or an international co-supervision agreement;

Doctoral students registered in the 2nd year of thesis for a period of 2 years, and doctoral students registered in the 3rd year of thesis for a period of 1 year, whose system already provides for international co-direction or a joint supervision agreement international.

Priority will be given to academic staff, especially women scientists from Haitian universities (teachers, lecturers, temporary workers) who wish to obtain a doctoral degree.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Be of Haitian nationality and reside in Haiti;
- Hold a master's degree (M2) at least, or equivalent, at the end of a training course conferring research skills;
- Have obtained the agreement of a thesis director in his home university (in Haiti) and a thesis director in a host university (in France or elsewhere) to co-direct the thesis.

Research areas:
All applications, in all fields of study will be accepted. Note that the Selection Committee of the Anténor Firmin program will be particularly attentive to applications in the following areas:

  • Climate change and risks;
  • Pedagogical innovation, educational technologies;
  • Intercomprehension, memory and movement of populations;
  • Sea, water, sanitation and renewable energies;
  • Health, biodiversity and food security;
  • Economy, Finance and Banking.

Possibility of co-financing:
The IRD is associated with the Anténor Firmin program by offering additional funding for two laureates with regard to the quality of the dossier and the research topic selected. IRD funding will cover the months the doctoral student will be in Haiti, for a maximum of 6 months per year. Candidates do not have any additional documents to submit, they will be informed of the IRD's decision as soon as possible.

The selection committee of the Anténor Firmin program will be particularly attentive to applications that present material support or co-financing by the home university or the host university, a Haitian institution, an international or foreign organization.

Main criteria used for the selection procedure:

  • Academic quality of the file (training, diplomas, employment status);
  • Scientific quality of the research project (issue, content, schedule, methodology);
  • The appreciation of the two co-directors on the importance of the research, the expected benefits, the international collaboration for the university and the host laboratory and the Haitian university;
  • The expected results and impacts for the Haitian and Caribbean scientific community and/or the economic and social development of Haiti and the Caribbean region;
  • The presentation of a clear and realistic budget;
  • The gender balance of the candidates.

If you are attached to a higher education and research institution in Haiti:
An official letter from your institution confirming your status on the faculty. This letter will indicate whether you are authorized to be absent during your thesis and, if applicable, whether your employer grants you study leave.

If you are a student:
An official letter from your institution confirming your enrollment status, faculty or department, and expected completion date of your training

If you are not attached to a higher education and research institution in Haiti and are not a student:
A personal letter of reference from an academic or professional in your field in Haiti who can speak to your accomplishments, future aspirations.

Submission of the application file:
- Complete files must be sent by Friday, June 18, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. (Haiti time) at the latest to the email address doctorat@antenorfirmin.org.

- The surnames and first names of the candidate (or candidate) must be mentioned in the subject of the message.
- All the components of the file must be written in French.
- Incomplete applications will not be taken into account.
- No additional documents will be accepted after the deadline of June 18, 2023.
