Haiti - Health : New public service of psychological support to the educational community
The Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) and the Haitian Association of Psychology (AHpsy) undertake through a collaboration agreement, initialed on March 16, 2023, to guarantee a public psychological support service to the educational community affected on a daily basis by scenes of violence.

This protocol, marks the beginning of a partnership between the Ministry and the AHpsy, will not only strengthen the capacity of the ministry to tackle stress, psychological shock and disorder affecting the learning process.

Minister Nesmy Manigat is betting heavily on this new partnership as much as he will strive to involve the School Health Department (DSS), the School Adaptation and Social Support Commission (CASAS) and other Technical Departments such as the Preschool Education Management Office (BUGEP).

"Going to school is one thing, learning is another. One cannot learn without being in the necessary condition for it. 'Psychic wounds' constitute a major drama even before the problems we are currently experiencing. Knowing that a generation has already lost a school year and that the traumas it suffers are numerous, the MENFP has a duty to seek all the partners who can help it give the appropriate response to these problems," argued Manigat

According to the details of Pascal Nerry Jean-Charles, President of the AHpsy), this initiative "[...] aims to improve the learning process too frequently disturbed by the situation of distress. In this sense, it is planned to provide psychological support to students, parents and teachers. This free service will be accessible to them, initially, via the telephone line : 29 19 9000."

It is also considered, to supervise School Directors and Teachers through training sessions aimed at helping them to have a minimum of psychological knowledge to be able to better support children in difficult times.

The third part of the partnership protocol concerns the launch, at the beginning of each academic year, of a vast continuing education program focusing, among other things, on child psychology and educational psychology.

It is also planned to visit the schools in order to make the educational actors understand the importance of mental health in general.

"To facilitate the success of this collaboration, the Ministry of National Education intends to mobilize its own funds but also international partners with the idea of providing technical and financial assistance to continue advocacy in favor of respect for the to life and the right to education for children," promised the Minister.
