Haiti - Environment : 62 earthquakes in the country (March 2023)

The Alliance for Risk Management and Business Continuity (AGERCA), representing the private sector and civil society in the National System for Risk and Disaster Management (SNGRD), reveals in its March 2023 newsletter that according to observations made from national (Ayiti-earthquakes, UTS-BME) and regional (Cuba, Jamaica and Dominican Republic) seismological networks, 62 earthquakes with magnitudes between 1.4 and 3.9 on the Richter scale were recorded for the throughout the national territory, from 1st to 31st March 2023.

This is a decrease of 48 earthquakes (43.6%) compared to the month of February during which 110 earthquakes were observed https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-39092-haiti-environment-110-quakes-in-february-2023.html

53 earthquakes (85.5%) had a magnitude less than or equal to 3 and 36 (58%) occurred at a depth less than or equal to 10 km.

34 earthquakes (54.84%) occurred at sea, raising fears of a tsunami risk if the conditions had been met (fault at sea, minimum magnitude of 6.5, maximum depth of 50 km ).

During the month of March 2023, Nippes, Grand'Anse and the South recorded 43 earthquakes (69.3%) out of the 62 recorded, compared to 54 in February (79.8%). We therefore witnessed a slight decrease in the earthquakes that occurred in March in Nippes and the South, while in Grand’Anse, the decrease is quite significant. The department of Nippes nevertheless remains the most affected in the territory.

From August 14, 2021 to March 31, 2023 (19 months 17 days), Nippes recorded 1,132 earthquakes during this period, Grand'Anse experienced 1,163 and the South 401, for a total of 2,696 earthquakes. It should however be noted that among the 18 earthquakes recorded in Grand'Anse during the month of March, 17 occurred at sea with their epicenters located north of Jérémie, along the North/Grand'Anse/ Nippes.
