On Friday, April 28, 2023, as part of an emergency alert procedure, the 18 independent experts of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) launched an appeal to the countries of the Americas and the Caribbean to suspend deportations of Haitians as their country faces an unprecedented wave of violence. The committee expressed concern about deportation measures taken "without an adequate assessment of the protection needs" of each individual. The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands have announced repressive measures against Haitians in an irregular migration situation while the United States has presented a plan to allow accelerated deportations of Haitians and other migrants to Mexico. From January to March 2023 the Dominican Republic repatriated more than 75,000 Haitians.
