Haiti - FLASH : The hell of Port-au-Prince told by its inhabitants (videos) 09/07/2023 09:42:08
Two years after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, the city of Port-au-Prince continues to sink into exponential violence. The inhabitants of the Haitian capital are exposed every day to the risk of being kidnapped, injured or even killed in street clashes between gangs, civilian self-defense brigades and police forces. This daily violence has been documented through the testimonies of 15 people living in Port-au-Prince, the vast majority of MSF staff, told in the documentary series "Haiti, caught in the crossfire". About 90 armed groups clash in the streets of Port-au-Prince and today control more than 80% of the city. Epicenter's internal survey of MSF staff and their families reveals a remarkably high level of violence. About 90 armed groups clash in the streets of Port-au-Prince and today control more than 80% of the city. Epicenter's internal survey of MSF staff and their families reveals a remarkably high level of violence. In 14% of households surveyed, at least one member witnessed extreme violence, such as street lynchings or murders. 5% say they have at least one member of their family who has suffered physical violence, including robberies or kidnappings. 30% of households surveyed also indicated that they had suffered material damage as a result of the violence. 90% of respondents consider the current security situation much worse than in 2022. It is this daily violence that is recounted in the documentary series "Haiti, caught in the crossfire". Through three episodes and 15 testimonies, this one tries to describe the daily life of the inhabitants of Port-au-Prince, who oscillate between fear and despair in the face of the continuous and limitless violence of the gangs, as well as the consequences on their future and that of their families.
