Haiti - Education : Minister Manigat meets with more than a hundred school directors
Friday September 22, 2023, in order to have the broadest possible idea of the situation of schools in Carrefour-Feuilles and the surrounding area, Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of National Education, accompanied by Étienne Louisseul France, Departmental Director of Western Education, spoke for two hours with more than a hundred directors of public and private schools, who are encountering great difficulties in resuming their activities for the 2023-2024 academic year.

This meeting should provide a better understanding in detail of the complexity of the situation in these schools. Many of them have premises which have been the subject of acts of looting, which have been set on fire and lost everything that was there such as benches, tables, cupboards, sanitary equipment and all archives.

"It is a duty for the State and society, in close cooperation with international partners, to work so that all children return to school and stay in school to learn without fear” maintained Manigat, even if he recognizes that the situation is serious; affirming “[…] depending on the means available and the way in which it can do it, the Ministry will not stop fighting for this. It is the responsibility of the State to continue to act to protect children's right to life as well as the right to school."

The Minister recalled that the census which collects data on the situation of students, teachers displaced by acts of violence and the schools which welcome them is continuing.
