Haiti - Economy : André Lemercier Georges at the head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance
Yesterday Wednesday, André Lemercier Georges was installed in the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), in the presence among others of the former Minister Ronald Baudin and the President of the Republic Michel Martelly, in his speech for the occasion Mr. George said that he will put at the service of the institution and of country his 32 years of experience to have an annual growth of 9% per annum over the next five years in Haiti, implement reforms and a reflection of economic policy strategy...

"...by giving me the portfolio of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, he offers me the opportunity to make available to the country, the training and years of experience I gained in the private and public sector during 32 years ...] Mr. President, I am grateful, and Mr. President I assure you and I pledge here to not unworthy of the trust you have placed in me, that the Prime Minister has placed in me, and that the Haitian people expects my services as the Minister of Economy and Finance. [...]

The action that I will take within this Ministry, during my time here, Mr. President ass it has been repeated often during your campaign, you made many promises, [...] your objective is to reach at least to allow that country, out of this limit of least developed countries (LDCs) and to improve the score of Haiti in terms of human development indicators, to do so I rely on the experience and professionalism of my comrades, of those who will work with me to implement reforms and a reflection of economic policy strategy.

We often think to this Ministry saying that it is the Ministry of Finance, I would like repeat my predecessor [Ronald Baudin] who is there and who said that first it's the Ministry of Economy [...] the financial policy will be at the service of the economy, the level of the Ministry of Economy we will have to develop these strategies that will allow [...] to improve the living conditions of the population, to develop an economic policy strategy that will allow us initially to increase the per capita income of our brothers and also reduce the level of poverty in this country.

At this level it will be necessary that at the level of the Ministry of Economy, there is a reflection that allow not only to encourage the investment and employment but also and especially to support the real sectors of the economy to achieve this level of growth that we have projected, which is an average of 9% growth year over the next 5 years.

So I invite everyone, and all those who are in the purely economic sector to work and we will get to work with the other colleagues of the economic sector in order to correlate a policy that will allow us to achieve these goals. At the level of the Ministry of Finance it's a good start, the Minister Baudin just said, moreover, he had entrusted to coordinate the reform and the modernization of the system of tax administrations.

Today we collects about 40 billion gourds, we have 10 million Haitians, with 4000 gourdes per capita it is obviously that we can not send all our children to school, improve health care of the population and ensure the security of the country, so there is a specific mission to increase substantially over the next 5 years the level of revenue, in order that we move from this 40 billion and that we arrive to reach this fiscal pressure of 15% which is our objective to allow the state to meet its needs..."
