According to the Spanish Press Agency EFE "[...] the Haitians prefer to ignore the consequences of the border closure ordered by the Dominican Republic in retaliation for the construction of an irrigation canal on the Masacre River, assuming without complaint the shortage caused by this measure."

Let's remember that almost half of what Haitians consume comes from the Dominican Republic, according to official figures, food products are among those in demand but Haiti also needs medicine and construction materials (mainly iron and cement). among others... Since the closure, the shortage of food products is visible in public markets and on the tables of restaurants and Haitian homes.

There is also a rise in prices as armed gangs ransoming transporters demand "more money to let them pass," further impacting the price at which traders sell their products

Dominican products such as coconuts, banana figs and eggs, chicken are rare on Haitian markets, their price has doubled or even tripled in a few days because they are contraband products.
