Haiti - FLASH : Haiti has reopened its border gate and allowed Haitians to enter Dajabón
Despite political opposition from some "leaders" to a partial reopening of the border, Haiti reopened its doors on Sunday, allowing a large number of Haitians to enter Dajabón so that they can retrieve goods stuck on the border on the Dominican territory due to the border closure. Given the entry of Haitians, some Dominican merchants opened their stores in the border market to sell their goods.

Members of the Specialized Land Border Security Corps (CESFRront) to maintain control, transferred the Haitians into their 3-wheel cargo trucks and motorcycles so that they could cross the country to their country loaded with goods.

The opening of the door on the Haitian side, to allow access to the binational market via the cross-border bridge, was obtained after a meeting on Sunday, October 15, 2023, of a delegation of Dominican businessmen led on Sunday by the businessman Héctor Kilderes Taveras, with the participation of merchants and authorities from Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Abigail Bueno, President of the Dajabón Mercnats Association, reported constructive discussions with a group of Haitian businessmen continue, emphasizing that Haitian traders hold most of the market stalls...

An entry of buyers and sellers from Haiti is expected this Monday, October 16, 2023 after an agreement in principle concluded on Sunday between traders and authorities of the two countries on the opening of binational markets, however it is not certain that Haiti reopens its doors this Monday...

Limber Cruz, the Minister of Agriculture of the Dominican Republic, said that trade between the two countries would begin to improve "[...] It is a relationship between two countries that must be improved, because neither of them is going to move, because they share the same island."

At the same time, the National Research Department continues the biometric registration process at entry through the Dajabón border, so that Haitian traders who intend to participate in the exchange in the Provisional Trade Corridors can come buy and sell their goods.

Let's recall that this tense situation between the two countries has its origins in the radical measures taken by the Dominican Government following the construction of an irrigation canal on Haitian territory, with water capture on the Massacre River that the Republic neighbor disputes...
