Haiti - FLASH : All public schools in difficulty in the metropolitan region must reopen in November 2023
Tuesday October 24, 2023, after a meeting between Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of National Education and around fifteen school directors, it was decided that “All schools in difficulty in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince must reopen in November 2023.”

On this issue, Minister Nesmy Manigat recognizes that there are many efforts made to study all the complexities of school problems which cannot work until today. However, the Minister believes that there are still some measures to be taken to allow all children to return to school and all teachers to return to their work everywhere without fear.

For this to happen, the participants in this meeting believe that the State must take all measures to facilitate the return of students to school. Furthermore, the State is invited to pay more attention to the activities of several NGOs and other international organizations which do not encourage displaced populations to vacate their schools, while providing them with various aid.

The Minister and the Directors respond to the need for a major cleaning of these sites to put them in good hygienic conditions to accommodate students and teaching staff, but also by making equipment such as tables, chairs, benches, available to school etc...

Since the resumption of these activities, the directors of these schools want the Ministry to provide them with other educational support as was done during the 2022-2023 school year through the Compensation, Consolidation and Recovery of Learning Program.

While this work will continue with the directors of public schools, the Ministry continues to seek the best strategy to support the work of the many private schools in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince which are also in great difficulty.
