Haiti - Environment : Crucial importance of university research in climate challenges

The Geoscience Research Unit of the Faculty of Sciences of the State University of Haiti (UEH) held a workshop on October 26 at the Hotel Villa Thérèse on climate trends of the last 40 years and their consequences.

The workshop took place around the CLIMEXHA project, an initiative aimed at predicting extreme climatic events in Haiti, supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Research and Development Fund of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (FRD/BRH).

In his speech, Ronald Gabriel, Governor of the BRH and workshop participant, highlighted the crucial importance of university research in identifying climate challenges. For him, science is essential to prevention.

Gabriel also recalled that the implications of climate go beyond the simple environmental dimension. Stressing that climatic fluctuations have a direct economic impact, influencing price stability, monetary policy and the intervention capacity of banks.

Alerted by the Global Fund International, the world's central banks are strengthening their initiatives. The BRH is on the front line. "[...] despite Haiti’s modest climate footprint, the impact on our economy is undeniable," said the Governor of the BRH.

In this climatic context, Ronald Gabriel affirmed that the BRH, via the FRD/BRH, maintains its commitment to supporting all projects aimed at strengthening technical and scientific approaches for a return of the economy to the site of sustained growth and sustainable.
