Haiti - Security : At least $320M already promised by the international for the Intervention Mission in Haiti
The Haitian Chancellery informs that a delegation led by Jean Victor Généus, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Haiti participated Thursday February 22, 2024 in the afternoon in a special meeting on Haiti which was held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), on the sidelines of the meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers.

This meeting took place at the request of the United States Government and was chaired by Secretary of State Antony Blinken assisted by the Undersecretary for Foreign Relations of Brazil, Ms. Gisela Maria Padovan.

Chancellors and Heads of Delegation from a dozen countries, members of the G20 and guests, as well as the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Amina Mohammed participated in this meeting which aimed to seek their financial support for the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) in Haiti.

The various speakers were unanimous in providing their support for a rapid deployment of this mission in Haiti, given the deterioration of the security situation. They agreed on the need to send a robust and dissuasive force, capable of effectively fighting gangs. They confirmed a strong commitment to Haiti and specified concretely what their participation will consist of, which will be, for the most part, in personnel, equipment, training and financial contributions.

"We urge the international community to join us in contributing financially, providing personnel, providing equipment, contributing logistics, and contributing to the training of this mission" In addition to the U.S. commitment to provide aid of 200 million dollars more than 120 million additional dollars have been promised including 80.5 million from Canada bringing the amount of aid to the Mission to 320 million for the moment "Today, we met more than one dozen countries which contribute or plan to contribute significantly to this mission in terms of personnel, equipment, training and financial resources including Benin, France, Germany and Jamaica. I think today at least $120 million more has been committed to this effort," Blinken said after the meeting in a press conference.

According to a senior Biden administration official, the latest estimate from the Office of Management and Budget puts the cost of the Haiti intervention mission at between $515 million and $600 million over two years https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41724-haiti-flash-high-level-meeting-on-the-crisis-in-haiti-on-the-sidelines-of-the-g-20.html emphasizing that the precise cost will depend on the final operational plans and needs on the ground.

Some countries also informed that, alongside their contribution to the Mission, they will strengthen their bilateral cooperation with Haiti in order to enable the country to consolidate its institutions and quickly improve the humanitarian and socio-economic situation of the population.
