Haiti - Politic : American reactions to the outbreak of violence in Port-au-Prince

Monday March 4th, 2024, the White House said it was observing with "great concern the rapid deterioration of the security situation in Haiti" which declared a state of emergency after a mass prison escape.

The UN chief concerned by the "rapid deterioration of the security situation" in Haiti :

Stéphane Dujarric Spokesperson for Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the ON, during a press briefing at UN headquarters in New York, said Guterres was alarmed "by the rapid deterioration of the security situation in Port-au-Prince [...] The Secretary General reiterates the need for urgent action, in particular by providing financial support to the [non-UN] Multinational Security Support Mission, to respond to the pressing security needs of the people Haitian and prevent the country from falling further into chaos."

Adding "The Secretary General also calls on the Haitian government and other political actors to quickly agree on the necessary measures to advance the political process towards the restoration of democratic institutions through the holding of elections."

Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick on the recent escape and state of emergency in Haiti declared "I am deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in Haiti, as evidenced by the recent declaration of a state of emergency and the imposition of a curfew in response to violent gang clashes in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. The reports of multiple prison breaks and the overall escalation of violence are alarming.

We must make public safety our priority and not allow criminal gangs to continue holding Haiti hostage. Haitians have been repeatedly asking for stability, safety from gang violence, and for their voices to be heard. The Haitian people deserve our attention.

I am also alarmed about the lack of progress towards a transition consensus government.

The Biden-Harris Administration, along with the international community, must focus on urgently restoring security for the Haitian people and alleviating the ongoing humanitarian crisis."
