Haiti - Insecurity : Monitoring of people displaced by violence (March survey)
In recent weeks, armed attacks have intensified in the Metropolitan Zone of Port-au-Prince (ZMPP). In addition to creating displacement within the ZMPP, attacks and generalized insecurity are pushing more and more people to leave the capital to find refuge in the provinces, taking the risks of passing through roads controlled by gangs.

In order to monitor these movements towards the provinces and inform appropriate response strategies, the International Organization for Migration (IOM - Haiti) has launched data collections. Since the start of this activity from March 8 to 27, this activity has made it possible to observe the movements of 53,125 people leaving the ZMPP, the majority of whom (61%) headed towards the departments of the Grand Sud (Grande'Anse, South, Nippes and South East) a region already hosts more than 116,000 people who had largely fled the ZMPP during the past months.

The IOM recalls that the provinces do not have sufficient infrastructure and the host communities do not have sufficient resources that can allow them to cope with these massive displacement flows coming from the capital.

Among the people interviewed leaving the ZMPP, almost 4 in 10 were traveling with families and the majority were heads of their families. Children represented more than half (52%) of the members of these families. The majority of these people had as their usual residence the neighborhoods located in particular in the municipalities of Port-au-Prince (26%), Delmas (16%), Pétion-ville (16%) and Carrefour (7%).

A large part of them (68%) were already internally displaced and almost half of them had already been displaced more than once for reasons linked to violence and insecurity. Among these people already displaced, 81% had taken refuge with their relatives and 19% in sites, before deciding to leave the ZMPP.

Most people (83%) indicated that they are leaving the ZMPP because of the violence occurring there and 59% indicated that they will stay outside the ZMPP as long as necessary. The areas located in Haiti were the desired final destinations of 96% of people, notably in the departments of South (20%; especially in the city of Les Cayes), Center (notably Belladère, Mirebalais and Lascahobas), South-East (the city of Jacmel mainly) as well as Artibonite. More than half of people (53%) indicated that they chose their final destination because they came from there. Furthermore, 97% mentioned having a family who would welcome them in their desired final destination while 3% did not have one.

On the other hand, the Dominican Republic was the hoped-for final destination of 3% of these people.
