In order to bring Toussaint l'Ouverture Airport into compliance with international safety standards, the demolition of 183 houses located along the fence wall at the rear of the airport is necessary to allow the resumption of air traffic, currently suspended since Monday March 4, 2024.

According to a note from the Government, meetings took place with all the families concerned to agree on compensation for the owners. Each house and small house was inspected and assessed, the compensation amounts vary from 500,000 Gourdes to 32 million Gdes. An amount of more than 300 million gourdes in total will be used to compensate the owners

The owners accepted the offers and gave the green light for demolition. More than 50 houses have been demolished and 12 owners have already received their compensation checks.
