Haiti - Humanitarian : Food and financial aid reaches Haitians

Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN, declared at a press conference that despite the context of gang violence which continues to ravage Haiti, UN agencies manage to reach Haitians in the besieged capital and in other regions.

Taking stock of the situation, he indicated that the World Food Program (WFP) distributed Monday and Tuesday nearly 10,000 hot meals to approximately 5,000 displaced people in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.

WFP continued its food distributions in Cité Soleil, and more than 65,000 people have received food since last Friday, he said, adding that the agency's goal is to reach 95,000 people by the end of this week.

As part of its school meal programs, WFP has helped 195,000 schoolchildren across Haiti.

The UN agency has started to transition from hot meal distributions to cash transfers for displaced people.

"So far, more than 37,000 people have received money. In the coming weeks, WFP plans to provide cash assistance to more than 95,000 displaced people," said Farhan Haq.

Following needs assessments in Gressier, after violent incidents which took place there recently https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42314-haiti-insecurity-armed-individuals-storm-the-gressier-police-station-video.html , the WFP plans to begin the distribution of hot meals in this community this Thursday, May 16, 2024.

Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) distributed water to two sites hosting displaced people and provided health services through a mobile clinic at a site in Port-au-Prince, according to the agency.
