Haiti - FLASH : Hurricane BERLY Cat. 5, 3 departments on Orange Alert 02/07/2024 12:45:02
Hurricane BERYL is gaining strength and is still located southeast of the Caribbean islands. During its passage over Haiti, Hurricane BERYL could cause strong winds and rain in the South, South-East and Grand'Anse departments from Tuesday afternoon to tomorrow Wednesday. The Hydrometeorological Unit and the National Disaster Risk Management System have announced an orange level of vigilance in these departments due to the threat of flooding, landslides and rising water levels on the South coast. The Hydrometeorological Unit in concert with the Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH) and the Civil Protection (DPC) maintain the ban on cabotage activities on the south coast of the country. Small boat operators should avoid going to sea from today until Wednesday July 3rd. The General Directorate of Civil Protection and the Permanent Secretariat for Disaster Risk Management (SPGRD) ask the population, particularly those living in disaster-prone areas, to respect safety advice, such as : • Always follow the weather report, the advice of the authorities and civil protection. Don't listen to rumors; • If you live near a ravine, near low tide, or near the sea, make arrangements to move to a temporary shelter or other home in an area that will not be easily flooded. • Never cross running water on foot, by bike, on animals, by car or motorbike. Don't tell yourself I have time... • If you live in an area that may have mudslides or landslides, find a place away from danger and also leave with your family just in case. • Secure anything that can be blown away by the wind and that is outside the house, such as : trash, tools, posters, decorative lamps, light bulbs, etc. • If necessary, protect boats and boats and tie them away from the shore. • Caring for fragile adults, disabled people and children.
