Haiti - ALERT : Anthrax, Haiti takes the first health measures 25/07/2024 10:08:37 According to the report from the west health department, these cases occurred after several people consumed meat from an animal that died suddenly. An epidemiological investigation is underway to identify the source of the infection, assess the extent and implement appropriate prevention and control measures. Anthrax is a bacterial infection caused by Bacillus Anthracis. It can affect humans through contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products. Of all its manifestations, the cutaneous form is the most common and generally manifests as black, painless ulcers on the skin. The MSPP invites the population to follow the following instructions: • Avoid contact with animals that have died suddenly or are sick. • If you experience symptoms similar to those mentioned above or have been in contact with sick animals, consult a healthcare professional immediately. • Inform local authorities: Report any suspected cases of anthrax to local health authorities so that they can take necessary action. • Personal hygiene : Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after handling animals or animal products. • Vaccination of animals: Farmers are encouraged to vaccinate their herds against anthrax. The Ministry of Public Health and Population, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, local authorities and international partners, has already implemented the first measures to contain the spread of disease and ensure the health security of the population. Health Officers are deployed in the affected area to monitor and manage cases. On the instructions of Prime Minister Garry Conille, Chancellor Dominique Dupuy held an important meeting with Dr. Georges Fils Brignol Minister of Public Health and the representative of the World Health Organization in Haiti WHO-Haiti on the urgent measures implemented put in place by the Government regarding around ten cases of anthrax in the country. "I had an important meeting with the Minister of Public Health and the WHO representative, regarding the urgent and effective measures taken by the government in relation to a dozen suspected cases of anthrax in the country. All necessary measures will be activated to treat contaminated people, decontaminate affected areas, vaccinate animals and increase public awareness of this disease," declared Chancellor Dupuis on her "X" account Learn more about anthrax : Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis, an often fatal bacteria in animals (sheep, goats, cattle and pigs), which can be transmitted to humans through direct or indirect contact with infected animals. or by inhaling the bacteria present in infected products of animal origin (leather, wool, etc...)Eating undercooked meat from infected animals can also cause anthrax. The cutaneous form of the disease is transmitted through the skin and is characterized by itching of the affected area, followed by the appearance of a small painless bump which turns into a pustule, then into an ulcer with a black spot in the center. The affected area is not painful, but the infection can cause fever, headache, and feeling unwell. More than 95% of human cases of anthrax worldwide are attributable to the cutaneous form of the disease. Symptoms of cutaneous anthrax appear almost immediately, within a day of infection. The pulmonary form of the disease is transmitted by inhalation of the bacteria. The infection first manifests itself with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough and feeling unwell. After several days, symptoms may progress to respiratory distress and shock. Anthrax disease can be fatal if antibiotic treatment is not started early enough. Symptoms of anthrax appear 2 to 6 days after infection but may not be visible for 6 weeks or more. The gastrointestinal form of the the disease is transmitted by ingestion of contaminated food. The infection causes abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and fever. Gastrointestinal anthrax is a rare infection and difficult to recognize. Symptoms of intestinal anthrax appear 1 to 7 days after infection. All 3 types of anthrax can be treated with various antibiotics. Importantly, early antibiotic treatment can cure most cases of skin infection. Pulmonary and gastrointestinal anthrax are more serious infections. Treatment is possible in the early stages of the disease, but mortality rates remain high if antibiotic treatment is not started before the appearance of respiratory symptoms. Mortality of untreated anthrax : Anthrax (anthrax) by inhalation and meningeal : 100% Cutaneous anthrax : 10 to 20% Gastrointestinal anthrax : approximately 40% Anthrax is not spread from person to person (so it is not contagious). Anthrax is diagnosed by analyzing samples from blood, respiratory secretions or skin wounds. The samples are sent to a laboratory to determine if they contain the bacteria that causes anthrax. Results are normally available approximately 2 days after samples are taken. HL/ S/ HaitiLibre
