Haiti - Politic : Holding elections «will be really difficult» if...
Prime Minister Garry Conille in an interview with the BBC World Service’s Hard Talk podcast with Stephen Sackur called urgently for the completion [of the arrival] of the security mission in Haiti, expressing concern about support for the Security Support Mission, saying that help from the international community "is coming too slowly and people are impatient".

He said the mission now has only two contingents of about 400 people and they need help.

"Right now, as you know, we have about 103 police officers per 100,000 people. So I have no doubt that we are understaffed," Conille stressed, adding that it is extremely important that the commitment made by Haiti’s partners, neighbours and countries to support this effort is realised as quickly as possible.

"We are certainly very, very, very concerned. The support that has been promised is coming too slowly. The Haitian people have been extremely patient. We have, and I say this, a very fragile transition team that is based on the expectation that the support will come soon." "The political season certainly will not be long in coming. There will be manipulations to try to take advantage of the very difficult situation that the Haitian people are currently going through," he added.

The first Kenyan agents arrived in Haiti on June 25 and have been there for just over two months, so the population is still waiting for the results, while the authorities are waiting for other countries that have offered to add more police contingents. While the "400 Mawozo" gang has taken control of several areas a few kilometers from the Dominican border, despite the presence of Kenyan agents.

Without security, the elections would be in danger

Asked whether he thought it was possible to organize free and fair elections in Haiti by February 2026, Garry Conille responded that if the country does not receive the aid and support it needs very soon, particularly with regard to the security mission and humanitarian aid and early recovery, "it will be really difficult".
