Haiti - FLASH : Rehabilitation and construction of a modern public market in Chambellan
The Chambellan City Hall, the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the World Food Program (WFP) have launched the Chambellan public market rehabilitation and construction project.

It should be remembered that this market, built in 2009-2010, was heavily damaged with some blocks completely destroyed by Hurricane Mathew in November 2016 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18823-haiti-matthew-the-government-will-assess-the-damage.html . Then heavily affected by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the Grand Sud region on August 14, 2021 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes-updated-10am.html followed by tropical depression Grace the same month...

This joint project has officially started, with the aim of rehabilitating and rebuilding the local market in Chambellan to make it a modern, sustainable, efficient and sanitary facility. This project aims to support and improve the living conditions of agricultural producers and strengthen food supply chains throughout the Grand’Anse department.

The market rehabilitation and construction process, which is expected to be completed in early 2025, was designed in coordination with the Chambellan City Hall through the ILO project for "strengthening agricultural opportunities through training and technological investment."

The market will consist of three main buildings with stalls for products, as well as a storage depot. In addition, a catering area, an administrative area, access to drinking water and an infirmary will be set up. The slaughterhouse will be rehabilitated and an area for the hygienic sale of fresh meat will be greatly rehabilitated. The complex will also include a water management and storage system, as well as a toilet area with a biodigester pit. In a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach, also serving, the catering service for cooking food instead of charcoal. The market will be equipped with a solar energy system and outdoor lighting with solar street lights for the environmental safety of the market.

Given the importance of the Chambellan market for the community and the entire region, the planning of its rehabilitation and construction integrates paraseismic and para cyclonic considerations with basic services (for a fee), in better security, hygiene and comfort conditions for traders and buyers.

WFP is responsible for managing the implementation of the project, including the management of the contract of the operator "ROC Construction" which was selected following a competitive tendering process. Once the work is completed, this infrastructure will be officially handed over to the Chambellan City Hall.

Note that the Chambellan market, which serves the entire Grand'Anse department, a significant part of the South department (including Les Cayes, Camp-Perrin, Cavaillon) as well as Port-au-Prince, is of strategic importance for the food supply chain of the entire south of the country. Located in a major agricultural area of Grand'Anse, the commune's agricultural producers produce cocoa, real trees, bananas, ginger, yams, beans, corn, as well as market garden crops such as tomatoes and cabbage.
