Haiti - Diplomacy : The real reason for Haiti's absence at Abinader's inauguration (Official)

Haitian Chancellor Dominique Dupuy puts an end to speculations circulating about Haiti's refusal to participate in the inauguration ceremony on Friday, August 16, 2024 of Dominican President Luis Abinader, who is in his second term.

The reason is the closure on September 11, 2023 by the Dominican Republic of the airspace between the two countries following the conflict related to the construction of an irrigation canal in Haiti with a water intake on the Massacre https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-40478-haiti-flash-the-dominican-government-announces-measures-and-issues-an-ultimatum-to-haiti-canal-river-massacre.html

Although informed by the Dominican Republic that this ban did not concern diplomatic and humanitarian flights, Chancellor Dupuy responded that "the Haitian authorities do not want to benefit from a privilege to which the Haitian people do not have access" and reiterated to her Dominican counterpart Roberto Álvarez the position of the Haitian authorities demanding the total reopening of the airspace without being limited to exceptions and without negotiations.

However, in "diplomatic language", Prime Minister Cornille and President Edgar Leblanc Fils of the Transitional Council informed President Abinader "of their inability to leave Haiti, given the multiple urgent obligations related to the national situation."

Nevertheless, Haiti will be represented at this ceremony by its chargé d'affaires from the Haitian Embassy in Santo Domingo...

Dominican Chancellor Roberto Álvarez regrets this absence of the Haitian authorities which, according to him, would have been a good opportunity to relaunch the binational dialogue.
