Haiti - Cap-Haitien : Official launch of rehabilitation work at the International Port

On Wednesday, August 21st, 2024, the Board of the National Port Authority (APN), in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), proceeded during a ceremony to the official launch of the rehabilitation works of the international port of Cap-Haïtien.

These works, according to the officials, concern in particular the storage area for containers and vehicles, the administrative buildings, the lighting of the port by the installation of three sources of electrical power (city power, solar panels and a 1 MW generator), as well as the installation of a fire-fighting system. The repair of the artesian well, in order to ensure the supply of two prefabricated metal tanks of 60,000 gallons each, the development of a space for the Harbor Master's Office and the construction of a sanitary block (men/women), among others, will also be taken into account in these works.

In his speech, Dennis Hankins, the American Ambassador to Haiti, was pleased to participate in the launch of this work funded by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID-Haiti) to the tune of USD $24 million. Hankins believes that this project is part of the American Government's strategy to encourage investment, job creation and boost the economy in the Northern region. The work will last 2 years according to the managers of the construction firm NH Global, which will be in charge of executing this project under the supervision of the Trigon firm of New Orleans.

Hankins believes that this project is part of the American Government's strategy to encourage investment, job creation and boost the economy in the Northern region.

For his part, Jocelyn Villier, the Director General of the National Port Authority (APN), in his speech declared "[...] Today's event opens new perspectives for a remarkable port, new ways to achieve a number of objectives for a better contribution to local, regional and national economic growth, job creation and facilitation of trade, calling on Port employees, shipping agents and partners to collaborate so that the work is a success.

This port built in 1982 has undergone transformations over the years without ever benefiting from major works, yet necessary for a long time already.

All port operators know that the quality of port infrastructure and equipment constitutes an essential factor of attractiveness, useful for any competitiveness; they can only be obtained by establishing sincere, solid and effective partnerships."

Speaking on behalf of the government, Dominique Dupuy, Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed this project, launched at a time when the city of Cap-Haïtien represents a real vector of economic and tourist development. She hopes that it will be a source of job creation and development opportunities for the country's second city.
