Haiti - Economy : Debate on investment and financing opportunities in Haiti 08/09/2024 10:38:22 Excerpts from the opening speech of James MONAZARD, Minister of Commerce and Industry : "[...] Ladies and Gentlemen The context is difficult! Very difficult even! We started the 2020-2030 decade with the COVID-19 pandemic which generated national socio-economic impacts [...] then the great South, one of the strategic regions in terms of investment opportunities, was hit by an earthquake on August 14, 2021 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes-updated-10am.html https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34488-haiti-flash-more-than-300-dead-nearly-2-000-injured-very-significant-material-damage-provisional-assessment.html [...] and as if that were not enough, the security situation has experienced an accelerated deterioration, marked by the spectacular increase in kidnapping cases, unprecedented gang violence, the blocking of strategic roads and the forced displacement of populations, among other consequences. The combination of all these factors has caused a contraction of the national economy [last 5 consecutive years], and contributed to the establishment of a climate of instability, anxiety and terror that has particularly and very harshly affected the industrial and commercial sector, in all its components. Ladies and Gentlemen In making these reminders, I do not intend to complain [...] I intend rather to paint a portrait of the situation in its real proportions; as serious as it may be, we cannot remain inactive. More than that, we, the forces of the Nation, must act together to get the country out of the ruts of violence and instability, so as to set it on the path to development. [...] With the help of the Multinational Security Support Mission, our valiant police officers have been carrying out, for some time, a series of operations aimed at restoring the free movement of people and goods throughout the territory. We hope that soon the country will find the Peace that is necessary for the proper functioning and development of the industrial and commercial sector. Ladies and Gentlemen, The future of Haiti is not in instability and violence, but rather in investment to create decent jobs, boost economic growth, organize a better sharing of wealth and guarantee the quality of life of citizens as well as collective well-being. It is in this perspective that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is organizing this 17th Edition of the Thursdays of MCI, which allows for the discussion of investment and financing opportunities in the country. In the public debate, we often highlight the availability of labor. We report on the obstacles to the development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. We index the under-allocation of domestic credits to private initiatives... But, do we communicate enough on investment opportunities ? Do we talk enough about promising sectors or poles of economic development and growth ? Are we drawing enough attention to the investment incentives that exist ? In short, in which promising sectors can we invest today or tomorrow in Haiti ? What financing is available or possible ? These are the questions that the Ministry intends to raise, by making this discussion framework available to the different groups of stakeholders and sectors concerned : entrepreneurs, investors, project leaders, academics, stakeholders in the local financial world, without forgetting those who operate the multiple incentive and investment support mechanisms. By organizing this activity, the Ministry wishes to encourage a structuring and interinstitutional reflection on the facilities that are dedicated to investors via the Commercial Code, without forgetting the other State support mechanisms. It also wishes to contribute to the popularization of financial products and services that exist at the level of banking institutions, financing companies, the cooperative sector and Haiti's technical and financial partners.
