On Saturday, September 14, 2024 in the morning, the explosion of a tanker truck in the Calbassier area, in Miragoâne, caused at least 64 victims, while residents unaware of the danger, were recovering the fuel that was leaking from a tanker truck immobilized on the road, which was losing fuel following an accident with another truck.

The Civil Protection Directorate (DPC) of Nippes proceeded to the partial activation of the Departmental Emergency Operation Center (COUD) to ensure the coordination and control of operations

The first provisional assessment of the Civil Protection of the Nippes region mentioned 16 deaths, but according to Emmanuel Pierre, National Director General of Civil Protection, other charred bodies were discovered Saturday evening near the site of the explosion, increasing the provisional assessment from 16 to 24 deaths.

At least forty people were injured, half of them very seriously. 19 were severely burned, who were to be transferred to specialized hospitals in Port-au-Prince thanks to a flight co-organized by the Ministry of Public Health and Doctors Without Borders (MSF). But only 6 were able to be evacuated Saturday evening, Emmanuel Pierre said.

The others, 80% burned, were untransportable and had to be treated on site, at the Sainte-Thérèse hospital in Miragoâne, explained Fidel Nicolas, head of Civil Protection for the Nippes region.

At least 8 vehicles including 4 ambulances were available for evacuations. Other injured people were rushed to the Saint Boniface Hospital in Fonds des Blancs and the Immaculate Conception Hospital in Les Cayes and neighboring establishments...
