Haiti - DR : 7 Haitian fishing boats seized by the Dominican army

7 boats (sloops) from Haiti that were practicing illegal fishing in the Dominican territorial areas of Manzanillo and Montecristi, were intercepted and seized in recent days by the Dominican Navy. About fifteen Haitian fishermen-poachers were also arrested.

In a report, the Dominican Navy reiterates its firm commitment to protecting Dominican territorial waters, avoiding and thwarting the entry of foreigners with the intention of carrying out illicit actions.

The last two boats were detected on Sunday near Loa Cayos, Los Siete Hermanos de Montecristi, where five Haitians were arrested fishing illegally in Dominican waters.

The seven boats are under the protection of the Dominican Navy in Montecristi, while the arrested Haitian nationals were handed over to the immigration authorities to be expelled to their country.

Let's recall that the general command of the navy has considerably increased the presence of naval units on the northwest coast, with a view to increasing the protection and surveillance of territorial waters and guaranteeing national sovereignty.

The navy is not only confronted with illegal fishing, but also with drug trafficking by sea, smuggling of goods, trafficking in human beings and firearms and the fight against damage caused to flora and fauna.
