Haiti - Contraception : Achievements, but much remains to be done 10/10/2024 10:14:00
The Haitian population has access to a range of modern methods of contraception. The Ministry of Public Health and its partners have implemented strategies to increase access to long-term methods in remote communities. Much effort has been made. Progress has been made. However, much remains to be done to ensure that access to the contraceptive method of one's choice is a reality throughout the national territory. UNFPA continues to support the Ministry in training qualified professionals to promote the expansion of long-term methods, i.e. implants and intrauterine devices, as well as short-term methods. Among these is subcutaneous DMPA-SC, which would facilitate access to a method of contraception for young people without being discriminated against. According to the EMMUS VI survey, 35% of Haitian women aged 15-49 in a union used a contraceptive method: 32% used a modern method and 3% a traditional method. 44% of the total demand for family planning among women in a union is met by modern methods. Among women aged 15-49 currently in a union and who do not have children, 50% intend to use family planning in the future. 38% of women aged 15-49 in a union have unmet needs for family planning. The Ministry of Public Health and Population aims to reduce the percentage of unmet needs for family planning by 10% by increasing contraceptive prevalence. HL/ HaitiLibre
