Haiti - Agriculture : The Deputy Jude Charles Faustin appeal to the promotion of local products
The Deputy Jude Charles Faustin (Borgne/Port Margot - KONBIT) before the constant rise of food products of first necessity, considers that it is urgent that the country is endowed with a genuine agricultural policy so that local products are competitive to the imported products and not vice versa.
"...Every day we see that the prices of products of first necessity are selling more and more expensive, I think there is a problem, it is true that that in the country there is not really an agricultural policy [...] Given the prices that increase we know that domestic production should ensure that the prices of Haitian products, be competing with other products that come on the market. Unfortunately, the Artibonite rice is sold at higher prices, that the rice that comes particularly of Florida. That's something we need to look at why the Artibonite rice is more expensive than the rice of Miami [...] No matter how it is named, it is sold at higher prices [...]
Agricultural policy is something that needs to be redefined and I believe that the Ministry of Agriculture should look as soon as today, the various parameters in relation to domestic production, which should increase [...] the promotion of local products must be made in hotels and restaurants, because if you ask for a piece of yam in a restaurant in Haiti, this is not the yam which is missing here, they do not have this product. When you request a piece of potato in a restaurant or hotel you will not find it. They will have a tendency, whatever the hotel for breakfast to give you bread, cheese... things that are not produced locally, while what we produce is there, they neglect our products they do not give them any importance..."
