Haiti - Economy : Haiti unable to develop its mining potential
Haitian geologist Claude Prépetit, Director of the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), deplored the inability of successive governments to develop a mining exploration policy in Haiti.

Prépetit stressed the need for research and investment to identify possible large-scale deposits, particularly in the Massif du Nord, where there are indications of small gold deposits. "We need to discover significant deposits on the Haitian side to be at the same level as in the Dominican Republic, since studies carried out there between 2002 and 2023 led to the discovery of a deposit of 700 tons of gold exactly at 'Neita Restauración', near the border with Haiti," Prépetit mentioned as an example.

He recalled that in 2019 attempts to search for hydrocarbons were made in Boucan-Carré. Since then, no exploration permits have been issued for new research.

Prépetit said that the Dominicans are investing in the exploration of rare soil, minerals that are valuable for advanced technologies. He believes that there is a high probability of finding rare soil, including cerium, in the border region of Anse-à-Pîtres, on the Haitian side.

He insisted that the untapped mining potential represents a considerable economic opportunity for the country, if Haiti decides to develop a mining exploration policy.
