Haiti - Economy : Assessment of mining resources in Haiti
Following the 1st Mining Forum of Haiti, held in June 2013, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-8718-haiti-economy-the-country-relies-on-the-mining-sector-for-its-development.html , an agreement [± 200,000 dollars] was signed between the Government of Haiti and the South African Experts-Conseils firm "Council for Geoscience, South Africa" (CGS) [a South African state agency] to evaluate the mining resources of the country. Prime Minister Lamothe stated at the Forum "The issue of mines is an important issue, however, it is necessary that this be done in a professional manner, it is necessary that this be done in the national interest and in the interest of the people who live in areas where mines are, and finally it is necessary that we be clear about the terms of reference and what revenues Haiti will receive [...] the first and most important thing for us, is that when we talk about mining, we know that we do not have a great tradition in this area."

This contract has a duration of 8 months contains 6 phases leading to the production of a report aimed at assessing and explore all the mining wealth of the country and determine their economic potential. Haiti will be also equipped with geological mapping, allowing to pursue research in this area and to develop a land use plan.

Dr. Ambrose Walemba, CGS delegate explained that since almost a month "We completed the first phase which is the collection of data. All work that has been made by mining companies such as 'U.S. Geological Survey' (USGS) of the United States in Haiti, the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) of France, the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) of Germany and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have already been collected," experts have explored using these data, 6 departments (North, Northwest, Northeast, South, Southeast, Artibonite and Centre).

During this phase, "60 deposits, occurrences and indications of mineralization [silver, copper, silver, manganese, nickel, gold] were surveyed. "All of these deposits are not economically viable," stressed Dr. Ambrose, explaining the differences between index of mineralization, index of mineralization, occurrence and deposit (gisement).

Recall for our readers that the index of mineralization, is an indication of the presence at a precise point, of a few traces of a given substance, which allow to consider the presence of this substance in large quantities in a nearby location, whose extent and economic value are unknown. The geological occurrence is the probability that a given phenomenon happen again (eg gold vein) on a particular site during a reference period with a qualifiable or quantifiable level. Finally, a deposit is a concentration of minerals in the soil or subsoil, who will be the subject of preliminary work by sampling (core sampling) to confirm whether the deposit is exploitable or not.

So far, among the 60 deposits and occurrences inventoried, ten present "a pretty interesting mining potential on the technical and economic plan," the majority of sites are located in the North Massif, including Blondin, Douvray, Faille B, Grand Bois-Mont Organisé, Gris-Vert, Mémé/Casséus and Morne Bossa.
