Haiti - FLASH : First pockets of famine reported in Haiti 09/11/2024 09:08:12
More than 700,000 people are displaced within the country, more than half of them children, and recent violence in the capital Port-au-Prince has displaced an additional 12,000 people in recent weeks. Food insecurity continues to rise. Half of the country, some 5.4 million people, are hungry and for the first time since 2022, pockets of famine exist in some areas where displaced people live. The situation is further exacerbated by the forced return of Haitians from abroad. 60,961 Haitians returned to Haiti from the Dominican Republic (deportees, repatriates and volunteers) in the month of October alone. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43572-haiti-flash-diplomatic-clash-between-haiti-and-the-dr.html Despite these challenges, the UN and its humanitarian partners continue to provide humanitarian assistance. Since late February, the UN and its partners have distributed hundreds of thousands of hot meals and liters of water to displaced people in the capital. The UN has used planes, trucks and boats to deliver food, medicine and equipment to Port-au-Prince and throughout the country. OCHA stresses that more resources are needed to stem the escalation of needs.
