![]() Haiti - Religion : Message from the Catholic Bishops of Haiti 22/12/2024 09:20:16
"Beloved Brothers and Sisters, The Catholic Bishops of Haiti, in this Advent season, send a message of encouragement inspired by the words of the prophet Isaiah Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (cf. Isaiah 40:31). "This prophetic exhortation has greatly fueled our prayers and reflections on the life of our Church and the catastrophic situation in our country. "As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, the feast of the birth of the one who brings deliverance to all humanity, our eyes are constantly fixed on him to find our consolation, the strength and the courage to continue the good fight. This conviction leads us to renew our desire to always accompany the people in the midst of all their suffering and calamities. "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (cf. Genesis 1:26-27). This God who became Man challenges us all in these times when our country is going through great trials. Many families live in a situation of extreme poverty. Added to this is dehumanizing violence. Many people are homeless and without hope. Elderly people are left to their own devices, worried and saddened by their inability to face such a reality. Young people and children are full of worries about their future and tempted by discouragement. These distressing situations are caused by violence, corruption, cynicism and bad governance. "The event of God who became man to restore to man his dignity as a child of God pushes us to take into consideration all these terrible realities. Thus, We, the Catholic Bishops of Haiti, recently expressed how what is happening in the country troubles us and hurts us. Today again, we appeal to all of you, brothers and sisters, to tell you: our country is in danger, our situation is serious. Faced with all these misfortunes that threaten our country, all actors in society must overcome their divisions and conflicts to save the country. This is why we ask : To those who hold weapons and who kill, pillage, rape, burn and force people to leave their homes : stop these odious acts. These are good neither for the country, nor for the people, nor for yourselves who commit them. To those who lurk in the shadows and who secretly supply them with weapons and ammunition: stop fueling this blind violence that bloodies our society daily. To the State Authorities : seek to work in the interest of all instead of serving your own interests and those of your parties. Control customs and borders, ports and airports, private and public, to block the trafficking of illegal arms and ammunition entering the country. Put an end to the problem of insecurity by seeking effective means to disarm these children, young people and adults caught in the spiral of violence. Respond urgently to the needs of the displaced. Bring justice to the many victims. Restore order and peace. To the International Community : remember your promises and commitments to help Haiti emerge from the depths of violence and isolation in which it finds itself. Do everything you can to ensure that illegal arms and ammunition stop entering the country. The population left to its own devices must be able to count on the effective solidarity of other nations. All of you men and women of the country, we say to you : despite this calamitous situation, continue to march without being discouraged. Let's all become witnesses of hope. Every Haitian, whatever their condition, has a role to play in the transformation of our country. We therefore urge you to cultivate Peace in your families and communities. Get involved in initiatives of solidarity, education and awareness of peace. Saint Paul tells us: If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it (1 Corinthians 12:26). The feast of Christmas reminds us that God has become one of us. Thus God elevates, in a way like no other, the dignity of each human life. Let us therefore learn to love Him in each of our brothers and sisters. God's will is that we seek to "do everything so that each one finds the strength and certainty to look to the future with an open mind, a trusting heart and a clear-sighted intelligence" (Pope Francis). This is what the time of Advent invites us to, which also sets us on the path to the great Jubilee 2025, which will be opened in Rome by Pope Francis at the Mass on December 24. In our ten (10) dioceses in the country, we are opening the Jubilee on Sunday, December 29, under the theme 'Pilgrims of Hope'. We wish you all a Christmas 2024 and a Year 2025 that bring Security, Peace and Love. With the help of the prayer of Our Mother, the Virgin Mary, we ask God for all his graces and blessings for all of us Haitian People." HL/ HaitiLibre
