Haiti - FLASH : Port-de-Paix under water, several victims, significant damage
At least four people lost their lives (provisional toll) and several others are missing during the torrential rains that hit the town of Port-de-Paix, on the night of Sunday 22 to Monday 23 December 2024. Rains that caused considerable damage due to significant flooding. Several houses were destroyed or seriously damaged.

In a note, the Town Hall of Port-de-Paix writes "[..] it is with great sadness that we note the damage caused by the rains and floods that hit the town of Port-de-Paix. This disaster caused many material losses, but even more painfully, it cost the lives of some people, leaving many families in grief and desolation.

On behalf of the Town Hall of Port-de-Paix, we wish to express all our solidarity and support to the population of Port-de-Paix in this difficult time. We share the pain of the victims' families and we raise all those affected in prayer, to ask them for the strength and courage to get through these times."

In addition, the City Hall congratulates all the rescue teams, local authorities and citizens who are working tirelessly to provide relief, help the victims and limit the consequences of this disaster.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé urgently convened a strategic meeting at the Prime Minister's Office with the Ministers of the Interior, Public Works, Public Health, the Environment, the Secretary of State for Local Authorities, as well as the heads of Civil Protection.

During this meeting, an intersectoral team was set up to coordinate a rapid and effective response to this dramatic situation. This team is working tirelessly to assess the damage, secure the most affected areas and provide immediate assistance to families in need.

Emergency response teams are deployed to the disaster areas to support the population. At the same time, clearing and rehabilitation work on critical infrastructure is underway to restore traffic and reconnect isolated communities.

"My thoughts are with each victim of this tragedy," said the Prime Minister, who assured that the Government will spare no effort to help the victims. "We are at your side and we are doing everything possible to rebuild the structures and protect our compatriots."

For its part, the Presidential Transitional Council expresses its solidarity with all those affected by these floods and is mobilizing all available resources to help them. An emergency coordination was immediately set up to provide first aid to the population of Port-de-Paix and mitigate the impact of this disaster.

"The Council deplores with deep sadness the loss of human life and the destruction caused. He extends his most sincere condolences to the bereaved families and renews his commitment to working for the safety and well-being of the affected populations."

Due to the torrential rains currently falling, the Port-de-Paix City Hall has issued a notice to the population of the increased risks of flooding in several neighborhoods.

"We call for maximum vigilance, particularly in vulnerable areas, such as basins, ravines and neighborhoods close to rivers.

Important instructions to follow :

1. Avoid crossing flooded rivers or flooded areas.
2. Stay tuned to information released by local authorities.
3. Put your important documents and valuables in secure locations.
4. In case of emergency, contact the City Hall or emergency services as soon as possible.

The City Hall is actively working with the relevant institutions to assess the damage, clear blocked roads and provide assistance to the affected areas. We ask for everyone's cooperation to maintain order and protect our fellow citizens.
