![]() Haiti - Politic : Late President Carter worked for the Haitian people 31/12/2024 08:34:11
In a note, the American Embassy recalls Carter's relations with Haiti : "James Earl 'Jimmy' Carter Jr., the 39th U.S. President, dedicated his life to peace, democracy, and human rights. Known for his compassion and integrity, he brokered historic peace deals, championed global health, and fought for justice. During his White House tenure from 1977 to 1981, President Carter pressured autocrats like Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier to relinquish power and free political prisoners. His efforts led to the release of several unjustly detained political prisoners, including Professor Jean-Claude Exulien. President Carter worked on behalf of the Haitian people long after the end of his presidency. In 1990, he travelled to Haiti at the invitation of Provisional President Ertha Pascal-Trouillot to witness Haiti’s first free and fair election. Despite delays and difficulties, enthusiastic Haitians turned out in record numbers to mark the end of the Duvalier dictatorship and exercise their right to vote. Later in life, President Carter helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity in Léogâne, Haiti, in support of survivors of the 2010 earthquake. As President Carter once said, 'Our greatest blessings come when we improve the lives of others.' His life was a testament to this belief, inspiring us all to serve and uplift one another."
