Haiti - Environment : Validation of the National Strategy and Action Plan for Biodiversity
The Ministry of the Environment (MdE), through its Biodiversity Directorate, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), organized a workshop (in person and virtually) on January 30 and 31, 2025, to validate the updated version of the "National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan" (NBSAP).

This strategic document, aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, is a necessity for Haiti, like other countries committed to preserving ecosystems.

Joseph Ronald Toussaint, Director of the Office of the Minister of the Environment, Moïse Fils Jean Pierre, in his opening speech, stressed the importance of this event as part of the Government's desire to engage stakeholders from the public sector, the private sector, academia and environmental civil society organizations in a consensual approach to the degradation of biodiversity in Haiti. He also stressed the alarming loss of biodiversity, which represents a major threat to ecosystems and the well-being of the population.

Toussaint recalled that biodiversity in Haiti is divided into four essential dimensions :

The biological dimension :
Haiti is a hotspot of biodiversity, with a rich and diverse ecosystem that is of paramount importance in the Caribbean region.

The health and population dimension :
The Haitian population depends on many plant and animal species to meet its basic health and subsistence needs. In addition, the country has renowned knowledge of medicinal plants, unique in the Caribbean.

The socio-cultural dimension :
Biodiversity is closely linked to traditional practices, particularly through family medicine and popular beliefs, such as those associated with Haitian Voodoo.

The socio-economic dimension :
Ecosystems are the basis of the rural economy, providing essential natural resources, while playing a major role in ecosystem services such as climate regulation and water management.

For his part, Jean Vilmond Hilaire, consultant in charge of developing the SPANB, stressed that Haiti, through the update of the SPANB, is committed to achieving 12 strategic objectives spread over 23 specific targets. This document is a key planning and monitoring tool to align national efforts with the international commitments of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

He also emphasized the global vision of this framework, which promotes harmony between man and nature by 2050, where biodiversity will be valued, conserved, restored and used sustainably to guarantee the well-being of populations and the sustainability of ecosystem services.

Closing the workshop, Joseph Emmanuel Philippe, Director General of the Ministry of the Environment, stressed the importance of biodiversity in the lives of human beings and its fundamental role in the quality of health, food, culture, economy and climate. He stressed that the dispersion of species, fragmentation and destruction of natural habitats have immediate and irreversible impacts on the environment and the lives of populations.

He stated that this update of the SPANB represents a crucial step towards better management of the country's natural resources and a structuring action framework for the Haitian State. He concluded by calling on all stakeholders for collective mobilization in favor of the preservation and restoration of national biodiversity : "The collaboration and commitment of all in favor of the conservation of biodiversity are more necessary than ever."
