Haiti - Obituary : Death of Frankétienne, rain of messages
Poet, musician, painter, playwright, politician, screenwriter, writer, singer, novelist, teacher (Founder of Collège Frankétienne), Jean-Pierre Basilic Dantor Franck Étienne d’Argent known as "Frankétienne", born April 12, 1936 in Ravine Sèche, a village in the commune of Saint-Marc (Artibonite) died on February 20, 2025 at his residence in Delmas 31 at the dawn of his 89th birthday, leaving behind a monumental legacy.

Messages :
Leslie Voltaire, President of the Transitional Council :
"Frankétienne passed away this Thursday at the age of 88, leaving behind an immeasurable literary and artistic legacy. Poet, writer, playwright, painter, visionary intellectual professor, he shaped the Haitian language and imagination, carrying the voice of a people and defying the darkness with the power of his words. Haiti has lost a giant, but his work remains eternal. Our thoughts and sincere condolences to his family and to all those he inspired."

Prime Minister Fils-Aimé :
"Frankétienne has passed away, but his voice will resonate forever. Poet, playwright, painter, professor and architect of words, he made Haitian literature shine far beyond its borders. Through his writings, he illuminated the world, carried the soul of Haiti and defied silence. May his words remain, may his spirit still breathe. Farewell, master. May your soul rest in peace..."

Herwil Gaspard, Minister Delegate for Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs :
"A great artist has left us, leaving behind a timeless legacy. His work will remain a source of inspiration and light for generations to come. His passing continues to resonate through time."

Smith Augustin, Presidential Advisor :
"Frankétienne cannot die. Already during his lifetime, he had entered eternity. He only passed from this world to another with an immense joy of living, an immense artistic passion and a boundless love for Haiti. Thank you Frank, live forever, for you and for us, Haiti will rise from its ashes !"

The Art Center :
"Frankétienne was known above all as a writer and playwright, but he was also a talented painter. His paintings are a visual extension of his literary universe, where we find the same abundant energy that recalls his dense and polysemic texts. We were particularly honored to receive a donation of one of his paintings, quickly integrated into our permanent collection after the authorization of our Scientific Council. It is with great sadness that we learned of his passing. We extend our sincere condolences to all those saddened by this departure, in particular to his family."

Odette Roy Fombrun Foundation :
"On Thursday, February 20, Haiti lost a giant. Writer, educator, painter, playwright, Frankétienne shaped our culture, illuminated our minds and carried the voice of our people. In Ravine-Sèche, where he gave so much, his house remains standing, no longer as a simple home, but as a sanctuary of memory, an inestimable legacy for generations to come. His unwavering support for the pottery project left its mark on this community that he cherished so much. The Odette Roy Fombrun Foundation for Education extends its sincere sympathies to his wife, Marie-Andrée, a great friend of Mrs. Fombrun, as well as to all his family and loved ones. His work and commitment will remain engraved in our hearts."

French Embassy :
"The French Embassy in Haiti learned with sadness of the death of the Haitian writer Frankétienne, which occurred on Thursday, February 20. Writer, in Creole and French, painter, actor, singer, Frankétienne was a true prodigy of Haitian literature. Rest in Peace Frank."
