Haiti - Obituary : The Ministry of Culture pays tribute to Frankétienne
The Ministry of Culture and Communication (MCC) learned with great sorrow, of the departure for the afterlife, of the Haitian Creole and French-speaking writer, Franckétienne, this February 20, 2025, at the age of 88, following a courageously endured illness. Indeed, according to his family, Frank Étienne, on the evening of February 20, 2025, died in his bed, as he had always wished.

Born under the name of Jean-Pierre Basilic Dantor Franck Étienne d’Argent, on April 12, 1936 in Ravine-Sèche, in the Artibonite, Frankétienne is the pioneer of the spiralist movement that he co-founded with René Philoctète and Jean-Claude Fignolé in 1968. His unique literary style has transcended time and crossed the world.

Novelist, poet, playwright, painter, musician and teacher, Frankétienne became known on the Haitian scene in the 1960s with the publication of his first texts and his first novel "Mûr à crever".

His novel "Dézafi"”, published in 1975, is the first novel written in Haitian Creole. Translated into English and French, this book has received several awards, including the “Best Translated Book Award” in 2019.

Alongside "Dézafi", we can cite other major works such as : "Au Fil du Temps", "Ultravocal", "“Pèlin Tèt", "Les Affres d’un Défi"... Paintings such as "Désastre" and "Difficile urgence vers la lumière" will mark all future generations.

The Ministry of Culture has paid tribute to Frankétienne in several forms, through different events. In 2002, the Ministry awarded him the Governor's Prize for the Rosée du Livre et de la Littérature.

The following year, he was honored by the Ministry in collaboration with the Musée d'Art du Collège Saint-Pierre for his remarkable work as a visual artist. In 2021, the Ministry honored him in a special way as a playwright.

Frankétienne has received various awards both nationally and internationally. In 2010, he was named UNESCO Artist for Peace, in recognition of his commitment to Haitian culture and his contribution to promoting the ideals of the Organization. The Grand Prix de la Francophonie was awarded to him in June 2021 by the Académie française.

Frankétienne leaves the memory of a passionate artist with an original and irreplaceable mark on the Haitian cultural landscape. Through his work that goes beyond the country's borders, Franckétienne has contributed to offering a positive face of Haiti abroad.

He remains and remains more than a major writer, he is a total artist who has marked his time. The various forms of artistic expression that he has explored speak volumes about his multiple human and aesthetic dimensions.

The Ministry of Culture would like to point out that Franckétienne was also a Minister of Culture in 1988 under the Presidency of Lesly Manigat and that we must not forget this short moment, at the head of this public cultural institution which was then called the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

Furthermore, Franckétienne was also crowned National Treasure, of course, alongside many other very committed personalities in the Haitian social milieu in general.

Finally, the Ministry recalls that thanks to civil society and in particular, the farmers of this small town where Franck was born, there does indeed exist today, in his very hometown of Saint Marc and more precisely in Ravine Sèche, a Franckétienne Museum to pay tribute to his birthplace, his anchor point, his family, the man and then the unique artist that he was and whom humanity will remember.

But Franckétienne remains and remains above all the man of Bel Air, this working-class neighborhood that never ceased to nourish his art or his talent, especially since Franck was sometimes nicknamed "le Blanc du Bel Air".

The Ministry presents its condolences to his wife, his children and grandchildren, to the family, relatives, friends of Frankétienne as well as to the entire cultural sector, both national and international.
