Haiti - Security : Martelly talks about the new public force

Concerning the financing of the public force the President Michel Martelly declared in an interview with a journalist of El Universal that he had found a way to finance it, "I found a way to finance this armed force in the same way I've found money for the education initiative. I understand that many people are watching carefully what we do, but we are open to working with civil society," however he did not specify if this way will be a new levy on the diaspora, an internal tax or other...

When asked which country has offered its assistance for this new force, Michel Martelly answered "all countries. Everyone wants to help. Some do not want to have that the force has weapons, they would like a engineering corps, a medical corps but they do not want that they are armed, although 'armed force' means 'armed force' (laughs)."

Concerning the commission whose he decree was published on Tuesday he declared "We created a commission to study and evaluate the return of the Armed Forces. We need a modern force, capable and ready to act in case of emergency [...] who will help rebuild the country," adding that "the Haitian government estimates that the new army can cost about 30 million, an insignificant amount compared to what the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah) spends its operations."
