Haiti - FLASH : FAA extends flight ban on Port-au-Prince

On Wednesday, March 11, 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a NOTAM (Notice to Pilots) extending until at least September 2025 the ban on U.S. airliners landing in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.

The previous ban was imposed in November 2024 after armed gangs opened fire on three U.S. commercial airliners flying over Port-au-Prince's Toussaint Louverture International Airporthttps://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43826-haiti-flash-faa-extends-restrictions-on-us-aircraft-flights-to-haiti-until-march-2025.html and was set to expire on Wednesday. The FAA has now decided to extend this ban until at least September 8, 2025...

Although U.S. air carriers, including cargo and commercial flights, may fly over Port-au-Prince airspace, they are prohibited from landing at the airport without prior FAA authorization. Note that this ban also applies to La Gonâve Island.

This NOTAM applies to all U.S. air carriers and commercial operators; All persons exercising the privileges of an FAA-issued airman's certificate, except for persons operating U.S.-registered aircraft for a foreign air carrier and all operators of U.S.-registered civil aircraft, unless the operator of such aircraft is a foreign air carrier.

This distinction has allowed the private Haitian airline Sunrise Airways to continue operating the only direct flights between Haiti and Miami International Airport (from Cap-Haïtien).

Although Toussaint Louverture International Airport is technically open, no domestic flights are in operation except for a few missionary flights, U.S. military aircraft bringing supplies for Kenyan-led security forces, and a few charters from other countries.

To leave Haiti, people must fly from Hugo Chavez International Airport in Cap-Haïtien, forcing travelers to navigate the dangers of gang-controlled roads.
