Haiti - Culture : Second Edition of the «Ghetto biennale»

The second edition of the "Ghetto Biennial" a cultural event intended to make discover the work of artists from the Grand Rue of Port-au-Prince and their Haitian colleagues, begins this Monday, December 12.

This year, fifty international artists from Australia, Chile, United States, Germany, England, Canada, France, the Bahamas and Italy, are in Haiti to create works that will be exhibited to the Grande-Rue.

Guest artists will have meet the challenge and prove that they can produce artistic achievements outside their comfort zone. Other Haitian artists from the surrounding areas will also be present to achieve and exhibit their works. An opportunity for all the artists, to share their knowledge, share ideas, artistic visions and build relationships... French architect, visual artist, Maccha Kasparian is the French guest artist within the framework of this biennial.

The launching and opening of the exhibition of sculptures "Nouvo Rezistans" by the artists of the Grande Rue, featuring new works of "Atis Rezistans", will be held December 12 at 4:00pm, at the French Institute of Haiti (99 ave Lamartiniere, Bois Verna).

The Sculptors of the Grand Rue and the Rue du Magasin de l’État, form a community of artists living in a neighborhood of downtown of Port-au-Prince. They have developed from a number of years, a rich cultural tradition in the field of Arts and Crafts. In December 2009, "Atis Rezistans," the sculptor of the Grand-rue have hosted the first "Ghetto Biennale." At the event, renowned artists were invited to come in the peripheral zone of the Grande-rue to achieve an artistic work on site. To quote the words of the writer John Keiffer, it was "a third dimension... an event, a moment created through a collaboration between artists from radically different backgrounds."
