The Minustah, whose one of the pillars of its mandate is to support the strengthening of the rule of law in Haiti has funded the rehabilitation and the construction of no less than fifty courts in the territory of Haiti.

This week, Mariano Fernández Amunátegui, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN in Haiti and Head of the MINUSTAH, met in Gonaïves, the authorities of the place, including the departmental authorities, the Mayor and the judiciary. The Special Representative visited the Seat of the Court of Appeal of this city, hose buildings and infrastructure have recently been renovated with funding of the Minustah through its budget line of quick impact projects (QIPs).

This renovation, which has cost USD$ 33.500, was executed at the request of Haitian authorities and the city council is responsible for the work. Since January 2010, the Court of Appeal, the second largest of the country, and whose jurisdiction covers the entire Artibonite Department, worked in a private residence whose the limited space, resulted to a very difficult work for the Officers of Justice and the functioning of the Court.

This project also funded by the Minustah, was executed in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and will enhance access to justice for all citizens of the area, while providing to the justice officials the conditions allowing them a better efficiency in the performance of local justice.
