Haiti - Politic : The Dominican Government will not reopen its airspace to Haiti

On Monday, March 31, 2025, Fritz Alphonse Jean, the President pro tempore of the Transitional Council, called for the reactivation of the Haitian-Dominican Joint Commission in order to resume dialogue between the two countries. He indicated that this dialogue would make it possible to address the crisis between the two countries and resume commercial and cargo flights from Dominican Republic airports to Cap-Haïtien.

The same day, President Abinader responded that the Dominican Government would not do so. "The Government will not open the airspace. I want to point out that the situation in Haiti is critical today. This situation is accelerating a series of plans and options that we are evaluating and discussing with various sectors."

He also emphasized that, even through Cap-Haitien, which would be the only option, given the situation in Port-au-Prince, the airspace will remain closed.

It should be recalled that the airspace between the Dominican Republic and Haiti was closed on March 5, 2024. The Dominican Republic's Civil Aviation Council (JAC) issued Resolution #46-2024, suspending passenger and cargo air operations between the two countries.

Regarding the request to resume dialogue through the Bilateral Joint Commission, President Abinader stated that he appreciated the statement and that it should be considered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
