Haiti - FLASH : 250,741 Haitians expelled from the DR since the beginning of the year 03/09/2025 10:52:18
According to figures published Monday, September 1st, 2025, by the Directorate General of Migration (DGM), the Dominican Republic returned 250,741 Haitian nationals to their country (repatriations and deportations) in an irregular migration situation between January 1st and August 31, 2025. The DGM reported that 35,276 Haitian citizens were returned to Haiti in August, continuing the policy of mass expulsions initiated by the Dominican government in October 2024.https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43334-haiti-flashrepatriation-of-10-000-haitians-per-week-the-great-hunt-has-begun-in-the-dominican-rep.html Repatriations are carried out after individual processing in DGM detention centers located in the various territorial districts. Each person's biometric data and fingerprints are collected, and their status and circumstances are verified. The DGM specified that repatriated Haitians are handed over directly to their country's authorities at the four official border crossings between the two countries. DGM statistics show that the number of Haitians returned to their country in August represents the highest number processed in a single month since the beginning of this year. Number of Haitian deportees per month (2025) : January : 31,221 February : 26,659 March : 28,534 April : 32,540 May : 34,290 June: 30,759 July : 31,462 August : 35,276 The arrests of these Haitians in an irregular migration situation represent a sustained upward trend, which also demonstrates the effectiveness of the operations carried out by the DGM, in accordance with the explicit mandate of the National Defense and Security Council and Dominican President Luis Abinader to combat irregular immigration and guarantee the integrity and sovereignty of the Dominican territory in the face of the serious crisis facing Haiti. The Dominican Republic's repatriation policy has been criticized by organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) due to the increasing number of vulnerable people, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children, being returned to an increasingly precarious humanitarian situation in Haiti, a country experiencing a serious security crisis and precariousness at all levels.
